The client, Alice Bell, is seeking permission for the erection of a fully serviced dwelling house together with all associated site works at Rathjarney, Piercestown, Co. Wexford at a greenfield area. The site is orientated north-east to south-west (approximately 75m by 40m in average length and breadth) with a west triangular projection at north-west aspect for some 15m. Archaeological test excavation was conducted on 2 June 2022.
Previous geophysical survey concerning the development (Leigh 2018) identified no archaeological or potential archaeological anomalies within the area of development. Some anomalies were recorded within the area of the enclosure to the north-west.
4 test trenches of 1.8m in width were excavated to the surface of the natural underlying subsoil. The trenches were designed to assess locations of greatest ground impacts as well as to enable cross-site coverage. It was found that the depth of the topsoil was 0.15-0.2. The underlying exposed natural subsoil was a very compact yellow to pale brown sandy clay with decayed stone. The only finds consisted of 19th- to 20th-century pottery fragments associated with previous agricultural activities.
No archaeology was encountered.
