The clients, Aisling Doyle & Philip Erskine, constructed a single dwelling house together with all associated site works at Ballinteskin, Oldcourt, Co. Wexford. Condition No. 3 of a Request for Further Information specifies requirement for Archaeological Test Excavation and Impact Assessment. The nearest extant monuments are a ringfort (WX034-032), situated 75m to the east-north-east and a ringfort (WX034-033) 135m to east of the site.
Test excavation and archaeological impact assessment were conducted on 16 April 2022. 4 test trenches of 1.4m in width were excavated to the surface of the natural underlying subsoil. The trenches were designed to assess locations of greatest ground impacts as well as to enable cross-site coverage. Topsoil, a yellow to pale brown sandy clay, averaged 0.1-0.15m in depth, but was 0.1m at shallowest and 0.3m at deepest (north area of the site). The underlying exposed natural subsoil was a red brown to yellow or yellow brown sandy soil with a very high concentration of small to medium decayed and undecayed shale.
No archaeology was encountered.
