Excavations for a new watermain which was laid on the Old Dublin Road, to the north of Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, were archaeologically monitored.
The watermain ran south-west along the Old Dublin Road starting at ITM 698326 644529 and ending at ITM 698033 642634. A total of approximately 2.4km of open-cut watermain and a 180mm pipe was laid along an existing road. Approximately 100m of pipe was laid near the archaeological zone of notification for ring ditch WX020-066-, in the townland of Clavass, and 150m of pipe was laid along the edge of zone notification for enclosure WX020-127 at Kilcannon. This work was carried out by Wexford County Council.
It was agreed to monitor two area along the scheme at the zones of archaeological potential for 100m in the vicinity of WX020-066 and for 150m in the vicinity of WX020-127. This was carried out to establish if any finds or features of archaeological significance might extend under the road.
The monitoring took place over several dates between July-August 2022 over the course of four days. No finds or features of archaeological significance were exposed during the course of monitoring.
