Targeted test trenching was undertaken based on the results of a geophysical survey at a proposed development for a single storey dwelling and detached domestic garage with wastewater treatment system and peculation area at Garraun Lower, Castlebro, Co. Wexford.
The receiving environment is a greenfield site surrounded by farmland. The site is located along a private lane that is the main access route to a farmstead. The site is adjacent to and partially within the zone of notification for a ringfort (WX024-010). Given the development's location in a zone of archaeological potential, a geophysical survey was conducted to identify previously unknown archaeological remains within the application area, under Licence 22R0034. The main response identified trends of possible archaeological significance. It was proposed to excavate a total of 11 test trenches totalling approximately 356m over the geophysical anomalies and footprint of the development to confirm if features of archaeological significance survive within the footprint of the development.
Test trenching of these trends on 16 May 2022 has determined the absence of sub-surface archaeological remains at the proposed development site.
