Monitoring of topsoil stripping was carried out at the site of a proposed dwelling (planning permission granted) near Portal Tomb WX035-052-- in Newbawn townland, Co. Wexford.
No archaeological finds, features or deposits were uncovered on the stripped access road or construction area for the dwelling house. An over strip close to the location for construction of the dwelling house (intended to serve as a storage area) uncovered three possible archaeological features. This area was covered with geotextile and the topsoil reinstated to preserve these features in situ.
Feature F01 (ITM 682955, 621493) was circular in plan, measuring 0.4m in diameter, containing a dark-grey/black fill with a good amount of charcoal. Traces of burnt bone were visible on the surface. This feature was beside feature F02, approximately 0.15m north; 7.7m north-north-east of feature F03 and approximately 75m south-east of the Portal Tomb.
Feature F02 (ITM 682955, 621493) was circular in plan, measuring 0.45m in diameter, containing a dark-grey/black fill with moderate-high amount of charcoal and a patch of sterile mid-brown silty soil (possible topsoil filtration). Traces of burnt bone were visible on the surface. This feature was beside feature F01, approximately 0.15m south; 7.4m north-north-east of feature F03 and approximately 76m south-east of the Portal Tomb.
Feature F03 (ITM 682952, 621485) was sub-oval in plan, measuring 0.74m in length and 0.6m in width (east-west orientation), containing a fill which was relatively rich in charcoal with visible sub-angular stones inclusions. This feature was located 7.4–7.7m south-west of feature F01 and F02, and approximately 82m south-east of the Portal Tomb.
