Archaeological monitoring of groundworks was carried out at Grange townland, Fethard village, Co. Wexford. The proposed development involved building a new bus shelter, to be erected in an already existing car-parking area, adjacent the northern wall of St. Mogue's graveyard and the western wall defining the grounds of Fethard castle.
As the site of the bus shelter is located within the curtilage of the historic town of Fethard (WX050-011), an archaeological planning condition was attached to the works by Wexford County Council (Planning Reference No. 20211521). This stated that a suitably qualified archaeologist should monitor all site clearance and demolition works.
The monitoring of groundworks was carried out on February 18 2022. These works necessitated the removal of tarmac in an area measuring c. 2.8m (east-west) by 1.8m. The excavation was carried out by a mini-digger which removed c. 0.15m of tarmac onto a modern compact stone fill. Subsoil was not encountered during these works and no archaeological features or deposits were identified.
