Archaeological monitoring of topsoil removal was undertaken at Lady's Island, Co. Wexford in January 2022 at the site of a new area of paving and seating. The work was carried out adjacent to a castle/tower-house (WX053-014001) and a bawn wall (WX053-014015).
The castle/tower-house at Lady's Island is associated with the Augustinian Canons, who helped establish a foundation here in the 15th century. The castle has a gatehouse attached to its western side and is flanked by a bawn wall which runs down to the water on either side.
The area stripped measured c. 13m by 8m in size. The topsoil was removed with a mechanical excavator equipped with a toothless grading bucket. Due to the shallow nature of the excavation, subsoil was not reached during these works and only topsoil/stone-fill was removed. As a result no intact archaeological horizons or features were encountered during this monitoring programme.
