Testing was undertaken in the rear yard of a former public house on Connaught Street. The 1874 Athlone Town map showed the presence of a short-lived Roman Catholic chapel and Augustinian Friary, as well as an east-west wall, turret and hexagonal structure which may have been associated with the Friary or the 19th-century Athlone Town Defenses. These remains, some of which were very close to the surface, were found in six test trenches in June 2022. The site appears to have been levelled and scarped at an earlier stage. Frequent post-medieval pottery and glass, as well as carved stones survived on the site.
