VESI Environmental Ltd (specialists in integrated constructed wetlands, wetland landscaping and Ecological & aquatic assessments) engaged Aisling Collins Archaeology Services (ACAS) to carry out an Underwater Archaeological Impact Assessment (UAIA) on a section of the Ara River. This UAIA was completed by the author and submitted in 2020. The UAIA recommended archaeological monitoring for all ground disturbances and metal detecting of any spoil removed from the riverbed.
The site was accessed over the bridge at the Link Road which is also one of the entrances to the Abbey Boys School. The school is to the west of the site with playing fields located between the school buildings and the proposed Ara River walkway site. It is currently a green field site with the railway line located at the southern end, the Ara River and Tipperary town are to the north.
Archaeological monitoring commenced on 11 July and was carried out over 6 non-consecutive days until 28 July by Aisling Collins and Jacqueline Mac Dermott of ACAS. All ground disturbances were monitored including the walkway, wetland area, culvert, and the deflectors in the river. All features were recorded, photographs and confirmed as modern. No archaeological features were identified.
