Archaeological monitoring was carried out at John Street, Cashel in October 2022 in connection with a S12 Notification Ref. NM05364. Site works comprised the demolition of a modern pitched roof and walls to the rear of the existing property, located immediately northof and abutting Cashel Town Wall (TS061-025023-). These works were required in order to comply with an Enforcement Order issued by Tipperary County Council (Ref: 19600296). The subject site is located within the Zone of Notification (Zone ID: R135763) for the historic town of Cashel (TS061-025—-).
The monitored demolition works comprised the removal of the pitched roof and the lowering of the walls of the existing extension, the removal of the courtyard wall and the reconstruction of the new roof. A small pneumatic air hammer was used to remove block-work and hand tools were used elsewhere. None of the demolition or reconstruction works caused any apparent damage to the upstanding remains of the town wall. No previously unrecorded subsurface features were affected as no groundworks were undertaken.
