Planning permission has been granted for the construction of a new primary school at Convent Road, Cahir, Co. Tipperary, combining the existing boys’ and girls’ schools into one new building. One of the conditions of granted planning permission pertained to archaeological requirements where it was required that the ground disturbance be monitored. The proposed works adjoin the constraint area for a recorded archaeological monument in the South Tipperary RMP. This monument is classified as a Historic Town (TS075-048).
The works were undertaken in two phases. Phase 1 entailed the construction of the new school whilst Phase 2 involved the demolition of the existing Girls’ Primary School and the construction of a new carpark, set down areas and landscaping on the imprint of the demolished school and its immediate environs.
Phase 2 works commenced in the summer of 2022 after the opening of the new school building and the subsequent decommissioning and demolition of the single-storey Girls’ Primary School. The decommissioned school had very extensive deep concrete foundations and was built off the natural deposition. The main site of the excavation works in Phase 2 were sited west of the former main entrance into the school grounds and the demolished school building. The area excavated measured 72m (east-west x 35m and extended to depths of between 600mm and 1.1m. Two modern features were uncovered, both associated with the recently demolished Girls’ Primary School.
No archaeological remains or features were uncovered in the course of the monitoring works.
