As part of seeking planning permission to build a dwelling house and undertake associated site works, it was required that a programme of archaeological testing be undertaken. The requirement for the archaeological works was due to the fact the site is located close to an archaeological monument recorded in County Tipperary RMP. This monument, TN047-068001 & TN047-068008, is classified as a Church and Graveyard. The church is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Cashel in 1302 with its patron being St Andrew. The church, ruinous now, measuring almost 30m long, was constructed with large blocks of limestone with large quoin stones alternating with smaller stones. The irregular square-shaped graveyard is walled with the church in its north quadrant.
A total of five test trenches were sited on the imprint of the proposed works. The four trenches on the imprint of the house site, garage and driveway were featureless with relative consistent stratigraphy across all openings. Within test Trench No. 5, which was sited on the percolation area, a linear feature was exposed. Located 3m from the south end of the trench, this 800mm-wide feature extended on a south-east/north-west alignment for a length of 7.7m and continued beneath the trench’s east and west baulk. The fill was a loose, dark brown sandy clay and stone inclusions and a small spread of stones within the infill. This feature was considered to be a field drain.
