As part of seeking planning permission to build a dwelling house and undertake associated site works, it was required that a programme of archaeological testing be undertaken. The requirement for the archaeological works was due to the fact the site is located close to an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS052-004001). Located c. 35m to the east of the development site, this monument consists a large roughly circular area measuring 94m (north-south) x 88m and defined by an earthen bank which has been mainly reduced to a scarp and the partial remains of a shallow fosse. A field boundary bisects the enclosure on the south-west/north-east axis as indicated on the 1st Edition OS 6-inch map. A church (TS052-004002) is located in the west quadrant of the enclosure, which, according to Gwynn and Hadcock, was the location of a monastery known as ‘Kill-mor-aradhthire’. All that remains are the low wall-footings of a small rectangular church.
A total of five test trenches were opened on the imprint of the proposed works. All trenches were featureless with relative consistent stratigraphy across all openings.
