A programme of archaeological monitoring of ground disturbance was undertaken over the course of one day at No. 8 Bridge Street, Clonmel, Burgagery-Lands West townland, Co. Tipperary.
The monitoring of groundworks involved the excavation of a pit within the interior of the substation building, measuring 0.4-0.8m wide, 2m long, with a depth between 0.4-0.6m. A trench was then extended from the doorway of the substation out into the west side of Bridge Street for a length of 3m (oriented east-west).
The excavated pit and trench were heavily disturbed with services and no virgin ground was exposed. The stratigraphy consisted of concrete/tarmacadam from 0.1-0.2m below surface level, with a layer of made ground underlying (0.2-0.6m).
There were no archaeological features identified during the course of monitoring. The only archaeological find included the bowl of a clay pipe with a manufacturer’s imprint of Ben Nevis Cutty on it.
