Archaeological monitoring was carried out under Ministerial Consent at Drumcliffe South, Co. Sligo on behalf of Drum East Group Water Scheme. The development works involved the opening of three trenches in existing cobble lock pavement adjacent to the N15 road, to conduct emergency repair work to a leaking water service pipe. In the direct vicinity of the works area there are several archaeological monuments including multiple Record of Monuments and Places sites under SL008-084 and National Monument No. 119, Drumcliffe High Crosses and Round Tower.
Monitoring took place on 24 October 2022 and 5 December 2022. The work was carried out by a mechanical excavator equipped with a graded bucket under archaeological supervision. The fill in the trenches comprised material backfilled after the insertion of the pipe and other services; no original ground was uncovered. No archaeological material was uncovered during the works at Drumcliffe South, Co. Sligo.
