An archaeological testing programme was carried out at Tully, Strandhill, Co. Sligo at the site of a proposed development which entails the construction of a single detached domestic dwelling. The proposed development is in the vicinity of the Zone of Archaeological Notification of RMP SL014-073001- Ringfort Rath and SL014-073002- Souterrain. Planning Authority Sligo County Council recommended that an archaeological assessment be undertaken of the impact, including visual impact, of the proposed development on the archaeological remains in the vicinity.
A geophysical survey was conducted by Dr James Bonsall under detection device licence 22R0187. The results of that survey indicated several anomalies with archaeological potential mainly concentrated to the north of the proposed development area. During testing the trial trenches were excavated in the footprint of the proposed house, driveway, and sewer area, as well as the north boundary to the site, where the areas of archaeological potential were indicated in the survey to assess any archaeological features that may exist within the Proposed Development Area.
Testing took place on the 16th of July 2022. Seven test trenches were mechanically excavated across the site. No deposits, features or material of an archaeological nature were noted in the Proposed Development Area during the test trenching works in test trenches 1-3, 5-7. A small deposit of shell midden material was uncovered in test trench 4; this material was fully excavated.
No works will take place to the north of the site where the geophysical survey indicated possible archaeological features. The site boundary to the north of the site has been adjusted accordingly to avoid any impact on these potential features and the revised northern boundary to the site is now further south a suitable distance of 30m from these potential features. It is recommended that the northern site boundary should be permanently fenced to provide an exclusion zone in that area for any future use other than as livestock grazing.
