The proposed development works entail the construction of a residential development of a single detached domestic dwelling at Breeoge, Co. Sligo. The overall area was 0.309 hectares in size. The proposed development is in the vicinity of the Zone of Archaeological Notification of RMP SL020-037---- Megalithic Tomb – Wedge Tomb.
Planning Authority Sligo County Council recommended that a pre-planning assessment be undertaken of the impact, including visual impact, of the proposed development on the archaeological remains in the vicinity. The assessment methodology included conducting a programme of archaeological test trenching at the site in advance of a planning application for the proposed development.
The site inspection took place on 2 February 2022. The development area consists of one field with undulating topography which slopes from south to north. The site was covered in low grass cover and was featureless. The site is enclosed by a post and wire fence. SL020-037----Megalithic tomb – wedge tomb is located a short distance to the south of the proposed development area. No upstanding remains of the wedge tomb presently exist having been removed during land reclamation in the 1970s. No finds or features of archaeological significance were noted during the site inspection.
Archaeological testing took place on 21 February 2022. Six test trenches were mechanically excavated across the entire site in the footprint of the proposed dwelling, driveway, and associated works. No deposits, features or material of an archaeological nature were noted in the Proposed Development Area during the test trenching works.
