The proposed development is in the vicinity of and within the Zone of Archaeological Notification of RMP SL014-134---- Ringfort Rath. During testing works, which took place on September 29, 2020, three trenches were mechanically excavated in the footprint of the proposed WW1 Memorial Garden. During the works two archaeological objects was identified in Test Trench 1; a chert scraper likely to be Neolithic and a fragment of a ceramic vessel which may be medieval in date. Neither find were discovered in a stratified context or in association with any archaeological features. Due to the occurrence of these artefacts, it was recommended that monitoring be undertaken of all groundworks associated with the construction of the memorial garden. Monitoring took place on 9 February 2022 under an extension to licence 20E0527. An exclusion zone of 20m was put in place in proximity to the SL014-134--- Ringfort, to prevent entry to this area by machinery or depositing materials in this area during the construction phase. No further material or features of an archaeological nature were identified during the monitoring of groundworks.
