Sligo County Council proposes, for safety reasons, to construct 140m of foothpath /cycleway along the northern side of the R287 close to Carraroe. Due to the proximity of the rath site SL042-227—-, the Council undertook a programme of pre-development archaeological works. These consisted of the compilation of an archaeological impact assessment, which recommended a phase of archaeological testing along the line of the proposed works.
Testing took place on 18 October 2022, and consisted of the excavation of two test trenches, one 40m long the other 80m long and both 2m in width. The trenches were opened within the field, parallel to the road and along the line of the proposed footpath/cycleway.
Not only was nothing uncovered in the course of the testing but it is probable that, due to the difference in ground levels between the field and the adjacent road, works to the footpath will likely involve raising ground levels, rather than any significant ground disturbance.
