Archaeological monitoring was carried out for groundworks (exploratory groundworks and pipe bursting) within the Zone of Notification for St Mary’s Cathedral (in ruins) and associated monuments, RO016-127001–RO016-008, and 20m either side of the Zone of Archaeological Potential at a stream (CH01).
The scheme was located along Main Street, Elphin and comprised the installation of 1,100m of replacement/new water mains and decommissioning 376m of existing mains along Main Street.
The stratigraphic sequence in all the Trial Holes and Trenches comprised up to 0.1m of tarmac and up to 0.55m of hardcore, overlaying mid-yellowish brown silty clay to mid-yellowish grey clay and multiple services.
No potential archaeological finds, features, or deposits were noted during the archaeological monitoring.
