Permission was granted for the demolition of an existing dwelling house and outbuilding and for the construction of a new dwelling house and outbuilding and for the installation of new domestic effluent treatment system and polishing filter, together with all ancillary site works and services, including relocation of vehicular entrance and relocation of front boundary wall at Lackagh townland, Drumsna, Co Roscommon. Due to the proximity of rath RO016-004, the planning authority recommended pre-development archaeological testing.
Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered in any of the four trenches examined. The markedly shallow topsoil noted right across the tested area allied with the distinct lack of a clear soil profile, with topsoil resting directly on undisturbed subsoil, suggests that the area had been significantly scarped. It is probable that this scarping was undertaken to level the site prior to the construction of the existing relatively modern dwelling house and this scarping may have removed any archaeological features and deposits which may once have existed on site.
