Test excavations took place on 11 August 2022. The site was located at Sacred Heart Home, Golf Links Road, Ardsallagh Beg, Roscommon.
Five trenches were excavated measuring 200 linear metres (400 sq m). Topsoil was dark brown, humic, silty-clay between 0.15-0.3m in depth. The topsoil overlay a moderately compact, light orange-brown, sandy-clay subsoil with frequent large stones.
A modern landscaping/levelling layer, varying in depth between 0.3-0.5m, was recorded in Trenches 4, 5 & 6. This comprised a dark brown/black friable sandy clay with occasional modern artefacts such as a plastic comb, tableware pottery, glass bottles and corroded iron alongside animal bone. The landscaping layer was deepest in Trench 6 at 0.5m depth. It lay directly on top of the subsoil.
No further features or artefacts of archaeological significance were recorded during the excavation.
