Archaeological testing was undertaken at Jamestown, Ratoath, Co. Meath. This report follows on from a desk-based assessment carried out by Dr Yolande O’Brien of Courtney Deery Archaeology & Cultural Heritage in 2019.
A total of 5 trenches were excavated measuring c. 313 linear meters. Aerial photography has shown that Field 1 has been heavily disturbed in recent years. Testing revealed one area of archaeological significance, which has been designated as Archaeological Area 1 (AA1). It comprises a cluster of three pits, one of which may be interpreted as a trough. All of the features identified during testing are associated with a fulacht fiadh/burnt mound site. Characteristic charcoal-rich deposits and burnt stone inclusions were recorded within the fills.
All identified features in AA1 are to be preserved by archaeological excavation (preserved 'by record').
