Archaeological monitoring was carried out at Blackwater Park, Abbeyland, Navan, Co. Meath. The site was considered to have archaeological potential as archaeological material was identified under licence 12E0103 in an area directly adjacent and to the east of the site (Area 2). The features exposed consisted of enclosures, kilns and linear features. This area is currently being used as a carpark.
The south-east part of the site, where groundworks are to take place, was stripped. No topsoil was noted. It appears
the area was subject to some ground reduction/levelling previously, likely during the construction of the carpark,
and the majority of the site had gravel laid on the top of the natural subsoil. In places, levelling material
measuring a maximum depth of 0.1m was introduced. A skim of natural subsoil and the levelling material was removed in order to expose clean natural subsoil. The natural consisted of a compact, yellowish-orange sandy clay.
No archaeological features or deposits were exposed or identified. The work is now complete, and no further
mitigation is necessary.
