Archaeological test trenching was carried out on the site at Knockmark, Drumree, Co. Meath. This was informed by a geophysical survey carried out under licence 22R0018. The survey identified a series of linear features aligned north-east to south-west and interpreted as possible cultivation furrows.
The site was considered to have archaeological potential due to its location to the north-west of church ME044-001---- located within graveyard ME044-001001- with associated font ME044-001003- and grave slab ME044-001002-.
A total of 6 test trenches were excavated within the site. Each trench measured 1.8m in width, and in total, 134m of linear trenches were excavated. The test trenches were excavated down to the natural subsoil. A mid-brown sandy clay topsoil and sod, with a combined depth of 0.4m to 0.6m, was taken down onto a natural mid-brown sticky, sandy clay with moderate angular stone and occasional decayed stone. A number of north-east to south-west aligned linear features were exposed. These features measured between 0.26-0.8m in width and 0.05-0.09m in depth. All were interpreted as representing potato ridge/furrows and account for the anomalies detected during the geophysical survey.
No archaeological features or deposits were exposed or identified.
