A programme of archaeological monitoring of topsoil stripping and earthworks associated with a group water scheme was undertaken at Irishtown as part of the Irishtown Greater Water Scheme, County Mayo.

The proposed works are spread across 5 separate areas (Areas 1–5) between Ballindine and Irishtown and within lands to the north and north-east of these two villages. The proposed scheme impacts a number of townlands including Ballindine East, Lugalisheen, Cloonmore, Carrowbeg, Lawaus, Burris, Lisduff, Branraduff, Boleyboy, Ballinvilla, Knockadoon and Levallyroe.

The works were carried out primarily by Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), with open-cut trenching only undertaken in one area where bedrock was encountered. Ground reduction works that were in proximity to the identified RMPs were subject to a programme of archaeological monitoring. No archaeological features or deposits were encountered during the programme of monitoring. No further measures in relation to archaeology are necessary.
