Archaeological monitoring was carried out intermittently here between July 2021 and July 2022. The initial monitoring of works was carried out from Bridge Street to Springfield, taking in the Military Barracks. The works connected with the Castlebar Urban Greenway and took place within the Zone of Notification of the Historic Town of Castlebar (MA078-003—). An amendment to the original plans was sought to incorporate the refurbishment of four park benches in the Mall at Castlebar by inserting concrete bases which required digging down to a maximum depth of 0.3m. Monitoring was carried out for ground works undertaken along the perimeter wall of the military barracks (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) Registration number 31209074) in order to identify any subsurface archaeological remains that may be present. During the course of the monitoring, the extant remains of a stairs, a well, and the remains of two walls were partially exposed, one of which comprised a banquette wall. These features were recorded and preserved in situ.
