The test excavation of a site in advance of its development in Caherrobert townland, 3km west of the village of The Neale in County Mayo, was carried out on 28 September 2022.
The project consisted of the construction of a milking parlour, an extension to a slatted shed and a walled silage pit. Testing was required as part of the planning process by the local authority and was necessary due to the proximity of the proposed development to RMP MA120-075, an anomalous stone group, which was located 15m to the south.
The proposed development was located across three fields within a farmyard.
The testing consisted of the excavation of four trenches, located to best cover the area of the proposed development that was accessible. The trenches measured 14.8m, 21.4m, 13.6m and 35m long respectively; 1.6–1.7m wide and 0.3–0.8m deep. The spoil from each trench was carefully inspected during the testing.
The pre-development testing revealed topsoil above natural subsoils. Two modern pottery sherds were found in the topsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
