An archaeological assessment in the form of testing took place at Ballina (Tirawley By.), Killala Road, Ballina Co. Mayo. The proposed development entails the construction of a 76 new dwelling houses with along with all necessary site works and ancillaries. The proposed development area is within the Zone of Archaeological Notification for MA030-105—- Burnt Mound.
Testing of the proposed development site was carried out following a further information request set out by the planning section of Mayo County Council. The work has been commissioned in order to determine the archaeological potential of the area and to suggest suitable mitigation measures. The area comprised a grass-covered field, surroundings, and former garden of the Cheshire nursing home.
Testing took place from the 16th to the 18th of November 2022. The work was carried out by a mechanical excavator under strict archaeological supervision. 15 linear test trenches were excavated across the entire development site, totally 976m. Each test trench was excavated through the overlying topsoil material to the natural substrate underlying the testing area. No material of archaeological significance was noted during the testing programme.
