A programme of archaeological testing was carried out at Dún Ibhir, Achill Island, Co. Mayo. The proposed works entailed the construction of a new dwelling house with wastewater treatment system along with all necessary site works and ancillaries. The development area is approx. 0.32 hectares.

The proposed development is a short distance southeast of Loch Dún Ibhir in the west of Achill Island. The proposed development area is within the Zone of Archaeological Notification for MA043-009—- Enclosure. As a result, the planning authority recommended pre-development archaeological test trenching.

Testing look place on 29th of October 2022. Ten linear test trenches were excavated at 5m intervals across the proposed development site, in the footprint of the proposed house, driveway, garage and percolation area.

Following consultation with Gerry Walsh, archaeologist, Mayo Planning Authority and Hugh Carey, National Monuments Service, it was agreed that MA043-009—- Enclosure be subject to a permanent exclusion zone of 5m on all sides and to be permanently fenced using wire and post fencing to prevent access during the construction works and thereafter to preserve the earthen monument from damage. This fence was put in place and test trenches were excavated around the perimeter of the 5m boundary fence around the monument. No deposits, features, or objects of archaeological significance were noted during testing.
