An archaeological assessment (test trenching) was carried out on the north-east portion of Field 1 at a proposed commercial and residential development at Ballymakenny Road, Yellowbatter, Drogheda, Co. Louth. The testing was informed by a geophysical survey carried out in April 2021 under licence number 21R0044.
A total of 9 test trenches were excavated across the relevant areas. Each trench measured 1.8m in width, and in total, 455m of linear trenches were excavated, targeting anomalies identified during the geophysical survey (21R0044). The test trenching identified the presence of archaeological remains on the site. Two linear features (C202/C302 and C602) and a possible pit (C603) were identified. The
linear feature C202/C302 was aligned north to south and measured c. 2m in width and was exposed in Trench 2 and also recorded in Trench 3. It corresponded with Anomaly 1a (as identified in the geophysical survey) and it corresponds with a field boundary depicted on the 1907 map. Two features of archaeological significance were identified and included the linear feature C602, which was aligned east to west and corresponded with Anomaly 24 (as identified in the geophysical survey) and the possible oval pit C603 which measured 0.81 by 0.83m. Both features were identified in the northern portion of Trench 6. Preservation by record was recommended.
