The proposed works were part of the Living in Carlingford/Visiting Carlingford scheme funded by Louth County Council and the Department of Rural Regeneration via the Rural Regeneration Development fund and are part of Project Ireland 2040.
The project progressed to construction stage with the Phase 1 development of an outdoor picnic area in the the green space to the east of the old railway station.
It was proposed to monitor the topsoil strip of the footprint of the main structure, extending to an area 16m east-west by 7m as well as the associated footpath and drainage works. On the basis of an agreed method statement a license was issued, with monitoring taking place between 10 and 18 October 2022.
Cartographic evidence showed that the site was located in an area of ground reclaimed from the sea in advance of the construction of the Greenore to Newry railway in the 1870s. Monitoring of ground works associated with the development showed the entire footprint to be located on made ground, with nothing of archaeological interest noted.
