Two cuts to accommodate the concrete bases of flagpoles on the north side of the castle at Newcastle West reached clay subsoil, under cobbling which had been disturbed during landscaping in the 20th century. This is beside the stump of a former church (LI036-067004), but there was no sign of burials. The monitored removal of imported topsoil and landscaping debris for an adjacent seating area found further traces of extensive late cobbled surfacing, but exposed no early material and no subsoil.
