The proposed development site was within the recorded Monument LI012-097, the settlement cluster of Kildimo, and was immediately adjacent to a recorded structure - the former Catholic church for Kildimo (RPS reg. no. 480). Testing was carried out as part of an archaeological site assessment.
Prior to testing the area had been largely disturbed and the ground lowered in the southern and eastern parts of the site. The dwelling in the south-eastern corner had been entirely demolished and the rubble brought off site. The areas of the two other buildings marked on the 1st edition map along the eastern boundary had also been scarped and no trace of them survived. Limerick City and County Council had completed a new wall along the southern and eastern perimeters and the new entrance had been completed. There was spoil and rubble from site and off site dumped on the surface and the remains of some of the trees which had been felled, lay in the northern area.
Five test trenches were excavated across the site. No archaeological features or objects were uncovered, however, three quern stones had been inserted into the exterior of the new perimeter wall. One had been found on the property in the past and the other two, a pair, had been found on an isolated farm at Cragganacree, 1.8km to the south-west, some years previously. The farm location and the family story of the original owners have been recorded in the excavation report.
