Archaeological test-excavations were carried out on 16-1h November 2022, as part of an archaeological impact assessment report to accompany a planning application for the proposed construction of approx. 140 residential units and all associated works and services at Crossneen, Co. Laois.
The proposed development site was largely greenfield; though a disused quarry indicated in the historic OSi maps is located within the south-western portion of the site. The recorded location of a large ringfort (LA037-003) known as Crossneen Fort falls partly within the south-western limits of the site.
A total of ten test-trenches were excavated across the site. The excavated trenches measured 35-180m in length, 1.8m in width and 0.35-0.8m in depth. Excavated material largely comprised 0.35-0.45m of topsoil overlying natural mid-yellow-grey sandy clay and orangey-brown sandy silt.
No archaeological finds, features or deposits were found during testing.
