Archaeological test-excavations were carried out on 19 May 2022 as part of an Archaeological Impact Assessment (AIA) relating to the planned construction of a large mixed residential development at Graiguecullen, Graigue, Co. Laois, in compliance with a further information request by the Laois County Council.
A total of 8 test trenches were machine-excavated across the proposed development site. These were laid out in a targeted array to broadly cover the proposed development footprint.
While nothing of archaeological interest was found across most of the proposed development footprint, features of archaeological or potential archaeological interest were identified to the north-east and east part of the site, in Trench 5 and Trench 6.
A group of small circular/sub-circular charcoal-rich pit features were exposed in Trench 5 and a linear cut containing charcoal was exposed in Trench 6. Identified features were cleaned, recorded and left in situ; the AIA recommends that further excavation be carried out to determine the exact nature and archaeological significance of the identified features.
