Archaeological monitoring was undertaken in February 2022 to meet conditions attached to planning permission for construction of a rear extension to a house at The Quay, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny.
The site, located in the townland of Cloghabrody, was situated north of the River Nore and on the northern side of the R700 at the Quay, Thomastown. It was located 50m east of the area of archaeological notification for the historic town of Thomastown, RMP KK028-040, and was also situated 60m east of the projected line of the medieval town wall, RMP KK028-040011--. Approximately 40m to the northeast we find the graveyard attached to the present Catholic Church in Thomastown, Church of the Assumption, RMP KK028-041001. Around this there is also a Zone of Notification, with the proposed development site within 30m of this area and boarders the current property.
The recommendation for archaeological monitoring follows the results of an Archaeological Impact Assessment. Condition 3b(iii) states that ‘All groundworks for these works shall be archaeologically monitored as per archaeological assessment’.
No features, finds or deposits of archaeological interest were uncovered.
