Archaeological test trenching was undertaken on 28 May 2022 on foot of a planning condition for a development at Carrigeen, Johnswell, Co. Kilkenny.
A total of 14 listed RMP sites are within a 1km radius of the proposed development, comprising a Church & Graveyard, Enclosure & three mounds, Quarry, Watermill, Church, Mound, Deserted Medieval Village, Castle/Tower House & Bawn and Bridge. The Church and Graveyard are located approximately 14-30m north of the proposed site. Consequently, the Planning Department of Kilkenny County Council recommended that a pre-development archaeological impact assessment, archaeological testing and visual impact assessment be undertaken to determine the nature and extent of any potential archaeological features or deposits.
Recovered during the works were two fragments of disarticulated human bone, a shaft fragment of an adult humerus and a shaft fragment of an adult tibia. Consequently, it was recommended that the entire footprint of the proposed construction, including for a 2-metre buffer zone, be stripped under direct archaeological supervision.
The archaeological monitoring was undertaken under an amendment/extension of the archaeological test excavation licence in December 2022.
Nothing of any archaeological significance or interest was uncovered.
