Archaeological monitoring was carried out of groundworks associated with the development of a three-storey apartment building on Black Mill Street, in Kilkenny City. The site is located within the Kilkenny City Zone of Archaeological Potential (KK019-026).
Demolition, wall underpinning and ground reductions were undertaken under archaeological supervision in January and February 2022. Groundworks revealed layers of concrete floor surfaces over a significant depth of modern demolition rubble and refuse overlying alluvial sands and gravels. A domestic hearth comprising a limestone hearthstone in a red brick surround was uncovered in the north-eastern corner of the site. A rubble-built wall was exposed in the southern portion of the site, running along the south-eastern boundary. No finds or features of archaeological significance were uncovered during the course of the works.
No remains associated with the historic town of Kilkenny (KK019-026) or any other recorded monuments were uncovered during these monitoring works at Black Mill Street. Ground reductions revealed that modern refuse and demolition rubble was present throughout the site to depths between 1.6m and 1.7m below the pre-existing floor level, and between 0.75m and 0.85m below current street level.
