Archaeological monitoring of maintenance and repair works to the exterior facades and interior, took place in October-December 2022 and will be ongoing in 2023. The Shee Almshouse, Kilkenny, is considered of national significance as the oldest almshouse surviving in Ireland, with a date of 1582. The site is listed as a Recorded Monument, and lies within the Zone of Notification established around the historic town of Kilkenny (RMP KK019-026). The building is listed in the Record of Protected Structures (RPS B167), is subject to a Preservation Order (PO 20/1976), and is listed in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) (12001073). In consultation with the National Monuments Service, the site is to be considered a national monument in the ownership of the Local Authority and all works are being undertaken under Ministerial Consent.
Monitoring of works to date consisted of repointing of the external building facades, repair to the chimney and roof and removal of modern internal and fittings partitions (c.1980). Monitoring is being carried out in conjunction with a full written building survey and interpretation by Maria Elena Turk and Reality Capture (laser scanning and photogrammetric) survey of the building, both conducted by AMS.
A full report will be compiled on the works in 2023.
