Archaeological monitoring was carried out in July 2022 relating to a residential development in Sheastown townland in Co. Kilkenny.

The conditions in the grant of planning by Kilkenny County Council required archaeological monitoring of all site clearance and groundworks associated with improving sight-lines along the road frontage at the entrance to the site. The permitted sight-line improvements involved the removal of a 20m-length of roadside bank and hedgerow to the north-west corner of the site.

Initially, hedgerow trees and vegetation were manually removed using a chainsaw, to facilitate access to a dry-stone rubble stone wall. The wall was subsequently removed by hand, with the removed stone retained at the property for reuse. Remaining vegetation and the earthen bank were then removed, with limited levelling at ground level being carried out using a mini-excavator.

No features, deposits or artefacts of archaeological significance were uncovered during the works.
