Archaeological monitoring of Geotechnical Site Investigations was carried out in the area adjacent to St Francis’ Abbey (National Monument: 72) and within the Zone of Archaeological Potential for Kilkenny City (RMP KK019-026----), under Ministerial Consent C000853; Registration No. E004950.
Site Investigations comprised two trial pits and one borehole in an area to be developed for the Abbey Quarter Urban Park and Urban Street developments on the site of the former Smithwicks Brewery site, dating from the 1790s to 2010.
Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered. However, archaeological monitoring was limited in
scope and the potential for preserved archaeological material remains high.
Note: Monitoring under licence 17E0642 was also carried out of the same site investigations in areas outside of the national monument. (See separate entry).
