A programme of Archaeological Testing was undertaken with respect to a proposed single residential site located within the Zone of Archaeological Potential established for Castledermot (RMP Ref: KD038-048; KD040-002); the line of the Town Wall Defences (RMP: KD040-002001) runs in a general northeast – southwest orientation outside the north/north-western site boundary, before running south, forming the edge of the stream to the west, and outside the site boundary.

The design of the testing programme was based on consultation discussions with the National Monuments Service; it included the excavation of two trenches – (T1 (L; 7m) & T2 (L: 10m)) – and topsoil stripping of the proposed house and garage locations (Max. extent: 10m north-south by x 25m.

No subsurface features of archaeological interest/potential were uncovered; a total of twelve sherds of medieval pottery were recovered from within the topsoil layer and unrelated to any subsurface disturbances; these were identified by Ms. Clare McCutcheon as Leinster Cooking Ware, Dublin-type cooking ware, Dublin-type ware and Castledermot-type ware.
