Archaeological testing was carried out on lands around Celbridge Lodge on behalf of Andrews Construction Ltd. as part of a planning application. The majority of the site is included in the Zone of Archaeological Potential for the Historic town of Celbridge (KD011-012).
The lands are bounded by Tea Lane/Church Road to the south, St Patrick’s Park to the north and west, and the R403 road to the east. Celbridge Lodge, a protected structure dated to the mid-19th Century (RPS Ref. B11-35), is contained within the site and is set within an attractive historic garden. The house is still occupied and occupies a central position within the site. The house, gate lodge, entrance gates and the stable building are all included in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) and are rated as being of regional importance.
Archaeological testing took place over two days from 12 October 2022 and eight test trenches were opened across the site, their locations reflecting both the layout of the proposed development and areas where the tree cover allowed. The natural subsoil was present at between 0.6–0.7m in depth in all trenches except for T6 and T7 where it was present at 0.4m deep. Areas of higher shattered bedrock were present in all the trenches.
No finds, features or deposits of archaeological interest were identified as a result of the testing.
