Carragh Bridge had been recently damaged due to an accidental collision with a passing vehicle. Repairs to the structure, a National Monument in the ownership of Kildare County Council, were undertaken under Ministerial Consent. Following consultation with the NMS it was agreed that the repair works should be inspected by an archaeologist in case any archaeological material or features were impacted by the repair works. Exposed material such as broken brick fragments in the fill of the bridge parapet wall indicated a construction date in the early modern period (18th-19th century) for the elements of the bridge impacted by the repair works. No finds, features or material of archaeological significance were identified during the works. The repair works, involving the removal of loose material and reconstruction with appropriate agreed replacement materials, were successfully carried out with no negative impacts on the archaeological resource.
