Archaeological monitoring of two ESB pole replacement works at Reask, Ballyferriter, Co. Kerry was completed in November 2022 under extension of licence 22E0245. The new ESB poles relate to the construction of a new dwelling house in Reask for which licensed test excavations were undertaken by the author in May 2022 with negative results (Dunne 2022). New poles are situated within the zones of notification (ZON) of a recorded ringfort, KE034-058 and Ecclesiastical Complex at Reask (Nat. Mon. No. 519, RMP KE042-060).
The two cuttings (1.9m deep) were excavated for new poles (‘A’ and ‘B’) and a further two pits (1m deep) in the vicinity of pole ‘B’, to accommodate stay wires. All excavations were carried out using a back-acting 7-tonne digger fitted with a 0.5m wide bucket. Stratigraphy in both pits was similar and comprised of dark-brown, good quality soft material with frequent stone inclusions. Natural subsoil was exposed in the depth of 0.3m and was mid-orange with frequent natural sandstone within. No archaeological features or artefacts were found.
