Test trenching was carried out Aughnanure Castle (Nat. Mon. No. 470), Site Entrance and Parking Area, Knockkillaree, Co. Galway. Three test trenches were excavated: one aligned east to west along the road (Trench 1) and two aligned north to south within the carpark area (Trenches 2 and 3). The trenches measured 1m in width and were excavated to a depth of between 0.7-1.2m. A layer of sandy clay with frequent medium and large stone inclusions was removed onto the natural bedrock. A thin layer of peat measuring between 0.05-0.1m was recorded in places sealing the bedrock. The water level within the carpark was reached at a depth of 1m below the ground level. Monitoring of groundworks is to be carried out in due course.
