Test trenching was carried out at a proposed development site, partly within the Zone of Notification for GA069-025 (religious house-unclassified). A local informant suggests that there was a ‘convent’ here (www.archaeology.ie), however there is no historic, cartographic or previously seen archaeological evidence to support this claim. The only physical feature in this location is a low, mortared stone wall that has an appearance consistent with being of part of a small cottage.
A previous geophysical survey (21R0298) identified the presence of four anomalies in the centre of the site.
Eight test trenches were excavated, each of which was 1.8m wide, with a total length of 173.6m. No archaeological features were observed that corresponded with the anomalies revealed by the geophysical survey. Occasional correlation was noted between the geophysical anomalies and changes in the underlying geology.
No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were observed. No evidence for the ‘religious house’ such as wall foundations or pottery was present.
