The test excavation of a site in advance of its development in Knockdoemore/Cnoc Tua Mór townland, just south-west of the village of Lackagh in County Galway, was carried out on 8 August 2022. The project consisted of the construction of a serviced dwelling house and domestic garage. The testing was requested by the local authority as part of the planning process.
The proposed development site was located in a large field of undulating pasture. A grass-covered mound of rubble, which was located just inside the south-east site boundary along the public road, was, according to the landowner, the result of road widening works in the last 20 years. No features of archaeological significance were visible within the proposed development site. The nearest recorded monument was a ringfort (RMP No. GA070-085), which was located over 100m away to the west.
The testing consisted of the excavation of five trenches, located to best cover the area of the proposed development. The test trenches measured 49.7m, 32.1m, 28.4m, 24.5m and 69.9m long respectively; 1.9-2.3m wide and 0.3-1.95m deep. The spoil from each trench was carefully inspected during the testing.
Testing revealed topsoil above two areas of fill and natural subsoils. The first area of fill, which contained tarmac and concrete, was the result of the adjacent road widening in the last 20 years. The second area of fill appeared to be the remains of a field boundary, which had been levelled and buried during land /field clearance works.
Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
