Archaeological testing was carried out on a proposed development site at Ballynacloghy, Co. Galway on 15 July 2022. The proposed development comprises a dwelling house, domestic garage, proprietary treatment system, and ancillary site works. The north part of the development site is located within the area of archaeological constraint for GA094-013 (Ringfort – rath), which is recorded in local legend as the ‘Rath of the Hounds Stone’. The development site occupies an elevated position below the brow of the ridge upon which the monument is sited. The north-west part of the development site displays a gentle downslope from north-west to south-east, the slope becoming pronounced in the south-east part of the site.
A tracked excavator fitted with a wide grading bucket was retained to open six test trenches on the footprint of the development. The trenches were 1.8m wide and ranged from 8m to 35m in length. The topsoil was 0.25m thick and overlay grey coarse sand, gravel and stone, except in the north-west part of the site where it overlay orange/brown clay subsoil. No archaeology was found but further monitoring was recommended in the event of a grant of planning.
